20,000 bees swarm in town centre

‘It was quite scary because there was just so many of them and I didn’t want to get stung but a lot of people were just fascinated and were saying they’ve never seen anything like it before.’

A SWARM of around 20,000 honey bees set up home in a tree outside Carillon Court Shopping Centre last weekend and even prevented some shoppers from entering the precinct, according to a witness.

Local councillor and wildlife enthusiast Roy Campsall captured this photo of the bees in a tree near The Flower Company in Swan Street.

“It was an amazing sight, there must have been 20,000 of them buzzing about the entrance to the shopping centre preventing any one going in or out,” said Roy.

“They eventually landed in the tree.

“It’s natural; when the hive gets too big the worker bees want another queen because they can’t get to the existing one. So they produce another queen but there can only be one queen in a hive so the old one has to leave and find another home.”

Lauren Baird, a florist at The Flower Company, told the Echo: “When I got here on Monday they were all in the tree and then they just all started swarming.

“It was quite scary because there was just so many of them and I didn’t want to get stung but a lot of people were just fascinated and were saying they’ve never seen anything like it before.

“I thought they had actually built a nest, that’s what it looked like, but as soon as they left the tree was back to normal. It must have all been the bees!

“They went up into the car park above us I think but I’ve heard they’ve moved into another tree.”
